There are many pain generators in the spine. Determining the source of pain begins with a good history and physical examination. The findings on the initial history and physical examination will determine which imaging test is needed for further evaluation. Depending on the pathology suspected a variety of injections can be used to help diagnose and relieve symptoms. Types of injections include epidural steroid injections, nerve root blocks, facet injections, median nerve ablations, and vertebroplasty. Vertebroplasty is used to stabilize vertebral compression fractures by the injection of bone cement.
