Fluoroscopy uses real-time X-ray imaging of internal organs. There are many reasons why your health care provider may order a fluoroscopic study. Common reasons include swallowing difficulties (barium swallow), abdominal pain (upper GI with small bowel follow through), and screening for colon cancer (barium enema) to name a few. Radiologists use the fluoroscope to help them place small needles into joints for arthrograms and to guide interventional procedures.
